Course description

In this class, we will explore the New Testament’s fifth book, often called The Acts of the Apostles or simply Acts. We will explore and analyze the history of the expansion of the church after Christ’s resurrection and ascension. We will learn a detailed outline and contents of the book; and the different stages of the expansion of the church into all the world; the various approaches the apostles and evangelists used in this expansion; and the pattern of worship in the apostolic age. We will investigate how the events in Acts are important in Scripture’s overarching redemptive-historical theme. We will compare and contrast differing theological viewpoints in relation to the events and teachings in the book. Finally, we will aim to interpret and relate Acts to the present—individually as Christians and corporately as a church—and to the world’s social, cultural, and political views.

Instructor

Rev. Nollie Malabuyo is the Pastor of Big Springs Community Church, Montague, California, a mission church of the United Reformed Churches in North America (URCNA). 

He has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of the Philippines, and a M.Div. from Westminster Seminary in California.

Rev. Malabuyo has taught Biblical, Systematic, and Practical Theology courses in two Bible colleges and seminaries in the Philippines. He has also lectured in the Philippines under International Theological Education Ministries (ITEM).

Course Requirements for students

1. Attendance at all class sessions, unless there is a valid reason for absence. 
2. Completion of the Study Questions and Pre-Assignment Item 2 (25%). Deadline January 12

   • Dennis E. Johnson, The Message of Acts in the History of Redemption. P & R Publishing, 1997. 272 pages
   • The read page count will have to be marked down on the exam sheet.
4. A final written exam (50%). Deadline January 30. A study guide will be provided to help you prepare for this test.
